The New Year has come in with a sad message for the people of Thailand. HRH Galyani Vadhana, sister of the King of Thailand passed away on Jan 2, at 2.54 a.m. HRH was aged 84 years.HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana was the eldest sister of two Kings of the Chakri Dynasty, HM. King Anandha Mahidol and reigning King H.M. Bhumibol Adulyadej.HRH Galyani Vadhana was born on the 6th of May, 1923 in London. Since the coronation of King Adulyadej, she has been a constant support to the King, helping him with several projects for the poor and rural people of the country. She is held in great respect by the people of Thailand, and in Phuket as well as the rest of the nation there has been an outpouring of grief over the loss.HRH Galyani Vadhana had been receiving treatment for cancer for a number of months and in the recent past had been admitted to the Siriraj hospital repeatedly. The royal funeral will take place at Dusit Mahaprasart Thorne in the Grand Palace, Bangkok. A state of mourning has been announced and Government officials will wear the colour black for 15 days, across the nation.People in Phuket can pay respects to HRH Galyani Vadhana at the Phuket Provincial Hall or every official office, where ceremonies will mark the mourning and prayers will be said. The Thai national flag will fly at half-mast for 15 days across the nation.
